ABOUT Robbo and Matho
Robbo and Matho formed a tight bond while playing together in Brisbane, and their chemistry remains just as strong in the studio.

- Place of Birth: Hobart, Tasmania
- Height: 184 cm (6 ft)
- Weight: 89 kg (196 lbs)
- Position: Midfielder
- Clubs: Carlton(2009–2014), Brisbane Lions (2015-2022)

Robbo is a former AFL star with a reputation for fierce competitiveness and a physical style of play. He grew up in Tasmania, and he then began his AFL career with Carlton after being drafted in 2008.
After 100 games with Carlton, Robbo joined the Brisbane Lions in 2014, and he quickly became a fan favourite. He was known for his aggressive play, his relentless physicality and his ability to win the ball, but he also banged in 71 goals for Brisbane.
His hard-hitting style came to characterise the Lions during their resurgence as a competitive force in the AFL. He helped them finish second on the AFL ladder in 2019, and they then won 14 out of 17 games in the shortened 2020 season.
Robbo was the joint winner of the Merrett-Murray Medal as Brisbane’s best and fairest in 2015. He took home the Shaun Hart Trademark Player of the Year in 2019, and he also received All Australian nominee honours in both 2019 and 2020.
In 2022, he retired at the age of 33. His last game at the Gabba was played in front of a sold-out home crowd, as Brisbane secured a famous elimination final victory over Richmond.
Post-AFL Career
Robbo has reinvented himself as a successful media personality and content creator since hanging up his boots for the final time.
Aside from hosting the Rip Through It podcast, he is a professional Fortnite esports player, a Twitch streamer and a popular YouTuber. He’s also a major advocate for prioritising family life, stressing the importance of spending time with his partner and children.
Rhys Mathieson
- Date of Birth: August 6, 1994
- Place of Birth: Lara, Victoria
- Height: 186 cm (6 ft 1 in)
- Weight: 87 kg (192 lb)
- Position: Midfielder
- Club: Brisbane Lions (2016-2023)
- Games Played: 72
- Goals: 29
Matho was often referred to as “Beast Mode” throughout his AFL career, thanks to his raw physicality, strength and ability to win contested balls. He grew up in Victoria, and he joined Brisbane as the 39th selection in the 2015 AFL draft.
Upon kicking his first AFL goal, he celebrated with a shotgun move popularised by Hawthorn’s Mark Williams. He was renowned for showboating, but that belied his powerful, hard-working and uncompromising playing style.
Matho made 72 appearances for the Lions, but he was unable to break into the senior team in 2023, and he was delisted. Since then, he has gained a reputation as “the most jacked player in footy.” He has completely transformed his body after pumping iron in the gym, fully living up to his “Beast Mode” nickname.
For the 2024 season, he joined QAFL side Wilston Grange Gorillas. In the opening round, he collected an outrageous 39 disposals along with two goals.
Matho is still hopeful of reigniting his AFL career, while he regularly co-hosts the Rip Through It podcast with Robbo.
What to Expect from the Podcast
The Rip Through It podcast offers a mix of insightful commentary, entertainment and laid-back Aussie humour. These are some of the key topics:
AFL Insights
Most episodes dive into the reality of life as a pro footballer. The pod thrives on its relaxed, no-holds-barred approach, as Robbo and Matho pull no punches when discussing the highs and lows they experienced in their careers. They analyse matches, discuss team dynamics and share stories of their personal experiences with coaches and teammates.
Interviews with Star Athletes
Episodes have featured high-profile guests like Nick Kyrgios and various former AFL stars. They provide candid, unfiltered insights into their careers, examining the trials and tribulations of competing at the sharp end of professional sports. These episodes are often recorded from iconic settings like AFL House or the Gabba.
Humorous Anecdotes
The chemistry between Robbo and Matho is evident in every episode. They often tell funny and relatable stories from their personal lives, including behind-the-scenes moments from their careers or misadventures in everyday life.
Robbo admits that simply getting out of bed to walk the dog is now as challenging as his former pre-season training sessions. He also discusses bizarre pre-game rituals, like wearing the same pair of socks for good luck. Robbo lights up episodes with his over-the-top impressions of AFL players, while Matho likes chucking out wild scenarios: “If you had to choose between winning a premiership but never playing again or playing forever but never winning a flag, what would you do?”
The hosts also mock the “hard man” persona of AFL stars, many of whom are actually delicate flowers that are more concerned about getting proper hydration and a good night’s sleep than ripping opponents apart.
Colourful Commentary
The hosts wax lyrical about pop culture, TV shows and broader societal issues. They are not averse to lambasting sports like cricket, mocking the slow pace of play compared to the cut and thrust of footy matches.
Some episodes have fun, unscripted segments where the hosts engage in spontaneous games or challenges. These light-hearted moments can include trivia, hypothetical questions, or riffing on ridiculous sports-related scenarios. These segments keep the podcast dynamic and add a fun, unscripted element to the episodes.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
This is a recurring theme. Robbo often opens up about his own mental health struggles, and his honesty is a big draw for fans of the show. The hosts discuss issues like burnout, stress and depression, and they examine how athletes deal with mental health, both during their careers and after retiring. These discussions often extend to general well-being, fitness and the balance between personal and professional life.
Fitness and Lifestyle
Listeners can also look forward to energetic discussions about training, nutrition and lifestyle. Robbo is determined to remain in top shape, even as his body begins to creak post-AFL. The podcast provides advice on staying healthy and maintaining a positive mindset through physical activity, along with tips on keeping a balanced lifestyle.
